Jackson Mahomes’ timeline of controversies: How brother of Chiefs star became hated by NFL fans
Chiefs quarterback Patrick Mahomes is often one of the NFL’s most popular stars. How could he not be? Aside from his ridiculous talent, Mahomes has stayed clear of off-field controversies since entering the league in 2017.
His family does not. Mahomes’ younger brother, Jackson, has become a hate figure for many NFL fans.
Jackson is always the center of attention. The 23-year-old boasts over a million followers on TikTok and is a key member of his brother’s matches. It’s hard to miss him—he’s at least a few inches taller than his MVP brother.
Although he has avoided controversy since the off-season, unlike previous years, he continues to attend matches and is active on social media.
Let’s look at why Jackson has a bad reputation from the sidelines to the stands.
Jackson Mahomes timeline of controversies
Dec. 2019: Jackson Mahomes and Patrick’s now-wife Brittany Matthews taunted Patriots fans at Gillette Stadium, singing, “Hey, hey, hey, goodbye!” That started a feud between Mahomes and Barstool Sports CEO Dave Portnoy, who called the pair “the two dumbest humans on Earth.” Mahomes and Portnoy have traded jabs on social media ever since.
Sept. 2021: Mahomes poured water on Ravens fans when the Chiefs lost to Baltimore in an early-season game, drawing criticism on social media. Patrick Mahomes admitted what his brother did was “not something that we necessarily want to do” but said there were two sides to the story.
Oct. 2021: Mahomes created controversy when he filmed a TikTok dance at FedEx Field on the ’21’ that was painted on the sideline as a tribute to the late Washington safety Sean Taylor. He apologized the next day.
Dec. 2021: Mahomes took to social media to criticize a Kansas City bar for “absolutely terrible” service, and the bar hit back.
“Often times people with un-earned status and a sense of entitlement think they are above the rules and will lash out at the employee enforcing them,” the bar said in a statement.
Feb. 2022: Patrick Mahomes was forced to respond to unfounded rumors that he banned his wife and brother from his games.
March 2022: Jackson Mahomes said on Instagram that the media was “destroying” his life.
Aug. 2022: A video surfaced on social media showing Mahomes berating a bartender and causing a scene.
Mar. 2023: Less than a month after his brother won Super Bowl 57, Mahomes was accused of shoving a waiter and sexually assaulting the female owner of a bar in Kansas. Mahomes allegedly “forcibly kissed” the owner, though his attorney denied wrongdoing. Police are investigating the incident as of Mar. 3.
May 2023: Mahomes was arrested and charged with aggravated sexual battery as a result of the incident from earlier in the year. Mahomes is accused of “forcibly” kissing a bar owner in Kansas, and video supports the claim. He was booked on May 3 and will be arraigned on May 5.
