However, there is more to her outfit than meets the eye. Watson collaborated with Eco Age and Calvin Klein to ensure that her ensemble was completely sustainable for the Green Carpet Challenge.
What sets Watson’s gown apart is its construction using three different fabrics, all of which are made from yarns derived from recycled plastic bottles. In a statement on her Facebook page, Watson highlighted the importance of addressing the issue of plastic pollution. She emphasized the significance of repurposing waste and integrating it into her Met Gala gown, showcasing the potential impact that collaboration between creativity, technology, and fashion can have on our planet.
Provided by Calvin Klein, the gown was carefully crafted with sustainability as a top priority, according to Emma Watson. She explained that every aspect of the dress was thoughtfully designed with the environment in mind, including the use of recycled materials for the zips and organic cotton for the inner bustier. Watson emphasized the harmful impact of conventional cotton production and praised the use of organic cotton, which is grown without the use of harmful chemicals. Furthermore, the gown’s lining featured organic silk that met the highest environmental and social standards.
Watson also expressed her commitment to the #30Wears initiative by planning to repurpose different elements of the gown instead of adopting the one-wear policy commonly practiced by celebrities. She detailed her plans to wear the trousers and bustier separately and to repurpose the train for future red carpet events. Watson believes that truly beautiful pieces should be worn and enjoyed multiple times.
In addition to Watson’s collaboration, Calvin Klein also created two more sustainable looks for the Met Gala. Margot Robbie’s dress incorporated organic Italian silk for its lining and featured zippers made from recycled materials. On the other hand, Lupita Nyong’o’s dress was meticulously crafted by hand at the Calvin Klein New York atelier.
